The turn is a historic event referring to the outing of Inderlanders approximately 40 years before the start of Dead Witch Walking. A bioweapon developed during the alternate history cold war era was released from an arctic laboratory. The virus was quarantined though it managed to spread south to Rio, it's path identified and documented, and subsequently ignored by the majority of the public. It mutated and attached itself to the T4 Angel tomato, as an intermediary carrier where it was shipped all over the world. A fourth of the human population was killed, though Inderland species were minimally affected. When researching why certain people were immune, the secrecy of the Inderland society was at risk of being exposed, so instead they opted to come out, showing that they had upheld society in the face of disaster. Fear of disease became fear of their witch, were, and vampire neighbors.
